Testimonials from guests

Stefan Helgi Valsson - Personal tourist guide in Reykjavík - this is what my guests said:

  • Stefan was outstanding in so many ways we hardly know where to begin. His knowledge is amazing and attention to the group's interest was truly beyond what we have experienced before. He created a profound sence of awe and delight with his country. His easy manner make him such fun to be around, yet he was always professional and responsible. Our deep thanks to you for putting us in Stefan's hands. He made this trip an experience we will always remember. Bill & Diane Lowe. June 2007. Quoted in Boundless Journey's Catalog for 2008-9, pg. 53.

  • Thank you for sending the names of all of the places we visited on our photo trip.  I really enjoyed going on this trip with you as a guide.  You are an excellent guide, and you made the trip so much more enjoyable for us. Thanks again, for doing such a great job. Chuck Gonzalez. California, USA.

  • We had quite an adventure and greatly appreciate all your efforts to make the eight days enjoyable and productive. Your knowledge, enthusiasm and ability to put up with us for 16 hours a day is admirable! Alan Sislen Photography. Maryland, USA.

  • Stefan, you really made the photographic trip special for our group in many ways. Things went so smoothly because of your expert advance planning and knowledge of what could work. You cheerfully accommodated our many special requests and some very long days. I was quite impressed with your mastery of Iceland details, including 1100 years of history, geology and geography, culture and tourism, and reams of statistics. Truly amazing. All of the travel guide book companies (Lonely Planet, Moon, Globetrotter, Frommer) should hire you to write their books, which would be greatly improved. I was also impressed with the Icelanders. They seem innovative and competent, content with austerity, neat, in touch with nature, and they show surprising adaptability. Take the wheat farmer, for instance: there in his remote farm he takes up a new direction agriculturally (with wheat), and makes some great photographs too!

I think you're the first guide who I've met that really has such a deep and valid knowledge - everything you said makes sense, and that's really rare for me.  I'm not being arrogant about my own knowledge or skepticism, just complimentary of your knowledge. It was a very pleasant encounter, and I'm sure all other guides in my life experience will fail to live up to your example. Tom Field. Maryland. USA.

  • Dear Stefan, following a few weeks' reflection we have concluded that your guiding of our recent (July 13-20, 2008) Boundless Journeys tour of Iceland made it the best vacation/tour we have yet experienced. We will fondly recall our tour around Iceland with you and the other guests for a long time.  We knew you were special within the first hour of the tour. Thank you for the informed and wide-ranging commentaries, stories and jokes.  Your consideration and accommodating everyone's interests made the trip personal and comfortable.  What a good time we had! Thanks again, Jim and Becky Sims. Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA.

You are an entertaining storyteller. You are an excellen driver and mechanic too! You are fun, considerate and thoughtful. Even though you have lived in other countries, you are totally Icelandic! You represent your country well. We have had a memorable and wonderful "trip of a lifetime." July 2008. • Dear Stefan, let me thank you, also in the name of Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen, for your outstanding job as our tour guide on 22 June 2008. We appreciated your profound knowledge on the culture, history and geography of your marvellous country. It was certainly not common that a tour guide let somebody completely unknown to him use his pair of mountain shoes and walk himself in sandals in rocky terrain full of slippery gravel and getting wet feet. 22 June 2008. Jean-Daniel Gerber. State Secretary for Economic Affairs, CH-3303 Berne, Switzerland.

  • A letter sent to a tour operator: Just a short note to tell you that we had a sensational tour with Stefan when we visited Iceland a few weeks ago. We were on the Blue Diamond tour and Stefan provided us not only with all of the info regarding the sights on the tour, but the background on Iceland, its history, foreign relations, fishing rights, power plants, customs and so much more. Answers and discussion about any question and topic we were interested in made the tour one of the best we have ever had. He is a true educator and guide, a fine story-teller and is so well prepared that he can speak to any subject.  We were indeed very fortunate to have him guide us for the day. Please pass our thanks to him. June 2008. Jane and Larry Rosendorf, Vicki and Irwin Graber, Rena and Mel Eisenbach. USA.

  • I'm writing on behalf of my fellow Committee members to thank you for taking the time to meet us for lunch to discuss the tourism sector in Iceland. We found it extremely useful to hear more the 'non-official' view of the tourism sector and the challenges it will face if tourism continues to grow. May 2008. • We took a winter break with another couple in February 2008 and visited Iceland for three days. We were so fortunate to have found Stefan to be our guide. He listened to what we hoped to experience and then took us to see places and eat at places that only an insider would have known about. His English is flawless and his knowledge of and passion for his country is fathomless. One of the highlights was the folk museum in Skogar and another was enjoying a special Icelandic cake that Stefan’s girlfriend baked for us. A memorable visit and a unique experience. Jane Howard, Deerfield, Massachusetts USA.

  • Thank you for your excellent guiding during the various tours we took with you in recent weeks. Pene and I had a really terrific time. The sights were simply fabulous. The explanations you offered us gave a new understanding and appreciation to a distant and mysterious land. Your driving skills on the icy road surely enabled us to see more New Years Eves!
